Sock Anchor

Our Sock Anchor system provides a discreet, reliable solution for stabilising damaged masonry structures — ideal for heritage applications, listed building renovations, and refurbishment projects where maintaining original appearance is essential.

The system consists of a high-strength stainless-steel Rib Bar encased within a woven elastic polyester Grout Sock, sealed at both ends. Once inserted into a pre-drilled hole, grout is injected into the sock, which expands to fill the contours of the hole. The sock acts as temporary shuttering, allowing water to pass through and create an intimate chemical bond with the surrounding material. When cured, the Rib Bar and grout form an integral, permanent reinforcement within the structure.

Where structures contain sharp or granular fill, a reusable protective sleeve can be used to prevent damage during installation. The exposed section of the Rib Bar allows for proof testing or load plate attachment, which can then be concealed to preserve the original façade.

Why Choose Sock Anchors

Compared to traditional methods such as partial or full wall rebuilds, Sock Anchors offer a faster, cleaner, and more cost-effective solution that preserves the integrity of historical and existing structures. This system avoids the need for heavy wet trades, reduces material use, and limits disruption to the surrounding area.

Key Features & Benefits

  • Quick installation — core, insert, and grout in one straightforward process

  • Reduces material usage, saving grout and minimising waste

  • High tensile strength, with ultimate loads up to 446 kN

  • Fully bespoke lengths and diameters available (suitable for 70mm–200mm core holes)

  • 316 stainless steel (marine grade) for long-term corrosion resistance

  • Anchorage into rock achievable, unlike many mechanical systems

  • Testable after installation using a hydraulic ram or dynamometer

  • Long design life — from 20 to 120 years

  • Sustainable choice, reducing carbon footprint, labour, and rebuild requirements

Key Features & Benefits

Performance & Range

Each Sock Anchor is made to order, with a choice of materials and specifications tailored to project requirements:

  • Materials: Galvanised mild steel or stainless-steel high-tensile Rib Bar

  • Ultimate tensile load: Up to 446 kN

  • Compliance:

    • Rib Bar: BS 6744 (stainless reinforcing steel)

    • Grout Sock: BS EN ISO 13934-1:1999 (tensile strength of fabrics)

Offering a range of materials and sizes ensures suitability across a wide variety of environments — from marine conditions to inland heritage sites.

Applications

Sock Anchors are widely used for masonry reinforcement and structural stabilisation, particularly in sensitive or restricted environments. Typical uses include:

  • Heritage and listed structures where appearance and conservation regulations must be maintained

  • Wall stitching and wall ties for cracked, multi-leaf, or solid walls

  • Securing unstable bridge arches and heritage bridges

  • Connecting external walls to hollow concrete slabs

  • Stabilising rubble-filled or voided walls

  • Projects requiring extended drilling lengths (typically exceeding 1m)

Design Considerations

Sock Anchors are engineered for long-term performance and corrosion resistance.

Spacers maintain the Rib Bar centrally within the hole, ensuring complete grout coverage and structural integrity once cured.

The system’s concealed design allows for aesthetically sensitive applications, making it especially suitable for heritage and restoration work where visible fixings are undesirable.

Installation & Usability

Installation is simple and efficient:

  1. Core drill a hole to the required depth and diameter.

  2. Insert the Sock Anchor into the pre-drilled hole.

  3. Inject grout under pressure using a suitable grout pump.

Testing can be performed on-site using a hydraulic ram or dynamometer to verify performance.

Anchor Systems offers training and on-site technical support for approved installers, ensuring correct application and compliance with design requirements.
